De Buck Gallery is thrilled to return to EXPO Chicago 2023 for its 10th anniversary edition open to the public open to the public Friday, April 14 through Sunday, April 16, 2023 with a VIP preview on Thursday, April 13. For a full online preview, head to EXPO CHICAGO ONLINE.

Highlighted in this year’s selection are works from Pittsburgh-based artist Devan Shimoyama‘s Tarot series, a body of work inspired by traditional tarot card decks that also reflect the artist’s own experiences. These works depict characters in transformation and illustrate the human desire to present ourselves as outwardly perfect, while revealing how mysticisms such as card reading can help us adapt to tumultuous times. Shimoyama’s first solo museum exhibition in Spain, “Devan Shimoyama: Tell Me,” opens at CAC Malaga in May 2023.

Our booth also features new work by rising talent Tiffany Alfonseca, a Dominican American mixed media artist whose vibrant canvases celebrate the varied and complex Black and Afro-Latinx diasporic culture.

We will also be presenting new work by Gommaar Gilliams, whose colorful canvases, replete with his signature lexicon of birds, rain, boats, and mythological figures create transporting allegorical narratives.

New works by Stephen Towns, Tina Williams Brewer, and Zak Ové will round out the presentation. Towns’ arresting new series Paradise Park was inspired by archival images of children in segregated parks. Paradise Park, which was open from 1949 to 1969, was popular with Black vacationers. While these images are jovial, there is an unsettling quality that speaks to the park’s creation in response to Jim Crow laws.

We are also presenting several new story quilts by Tina Williams Brewer, whose hand-quilted and collaged works incorporate photo-transfers, print-making, and hand-beading. Williams Brewer has an upcoming solo exhibition, “Tina Williams Brewer: Stories of Grace,” at the Columbia Museum of Art opening June 10, 2023.

British-Trinidadian artist Zak Ové is represented by a selection of doily works informed by the history and lore carried through the African diaspora to the Caribbean, Britain and beyond with a particular focus on the traditions of masking and masquerade. Ové’s signature Doily Paintings are unique, vibrant works that incorporate an inventive use of mixed media: crochet doilies found in markets and rummage sales around the globe.
