De Buck Gallery is thrilled to congratulate Jackie Milad for being a recipient of the 2024 Creative Capital Awards. Creative Capital, the granting and artist support organization, announced its 2024 awardees in the categories of Visual Arts and Film/Moving Image, totaling $2.5 million in grants to artists chosen from 5,600 applications. The Creative Capital Award provides each individual artist with unrestricted project funding up to $50,000, which can be drawn down over a multi-year period, bespoke professional development services, and community-building opportunities. Milad’s project, No Soy/Ana Agnabi, will be a suite of monumental paintings paired with a grouping of one hundred small to mid-size bronze, stone, and epoxy clay sculptures inspired by ancient Egyptian shabti figures.

Each of Milad’s small sculptures will represent one thousand objects held in the British Museum’s collection, as The British Museum holds the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities outside of Egypt, with nearly 100,000 Ancient Egyptian objects.

For the past couple of years, she has been utilizing their online collection and study room program to make drawn renditions of the antiquities in their collection, which she later sites in her work. By collaging these drawings and using them in canvas and sculptural work, Milad reinterprets and reclaims these historical objects of her heritage.
