De Buck Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the seventh edition of UNTITLED Miami Beach from December 5th through December 9th, 2018. We will be presenting a solo booth of all new works by Devan Shimoyama, featuring all new paintings and the launch of a new print series
The 2 larger works that will be featured are part of a new series that Shimoyama is working on, titled The Reading List. The series consists of portrait paintings of black identifying individuals in their homes, reading a variety of texts that have been recommended to Shimoyama, or books that have been important or significant in some way. Many of these texts were formative or rooted in fiction/fantasy and were somewhat therapeutic for Shimoyama, allowing the escape to fully immerse in a new narrative. All of these texts relate to the understanding of his self, identity, history, visibility and inclusion.
The smaller works, featuring Walk-ins Welcome, are paintings that go more along with the prints, delving deeper into the barbershop series, which was the subject of Shimoyama’s solo show Sweet at De Buck Gallery in 2017. Thinking about the link between the black barbershop and beauty shops, often located near one another (if not right next door). This is somewhat of a fusion of the masculine and feminine, seeing as you can get your eyebrows threaded or a shape-up for your hairline.
