For the 11th edition of Untitled, Art Miami Beach, De Buck Gallery (Booth #B46) is pleased to bring a selection of new and existing works by Devan Shimoyama, Zak Ové, and Gommaar Gilliams.

Highlighted in this year’s selection are works in Devan Shimoyama’s latest series, The Tarot, in which the artist takes inspiration from the centuries-old divination practice of card reading. In Gommaar Gilliams’ latest works, the artist employs his signature vibrant color palette and symbols—birds, rain, boats, and mythological figures—to build his allegorical narratives, introducing the element of time. Zak Ové will also play a central role in this year’s presentation with his unique works on canvas and inventive use of mixed media: crochet doilies sourced from around the world. His latest series is inspired by the writings of James Baldwin and continues on the themes of revolution and resistance from his earlier series. Baltimore-based artist Stephen Towns’ newest series of gilded works is inspired by archival images of children in the segregated Paradise Park, which was a tourist attraction for Black vacationers from 1949 to 1969.

DEVAN SHIMOYAMA

In Devan Shimoyama’s latest series, Tarot, the artist takes inspiration from the centuries-old divination practice of card reading. The Tarot Series expands on the cards in the tarot deck known as the Major Arcana (or the 22 named or numbered cards in the pack). The Tarot Series references imagery and cultural symbols including astrological signs and natal charts, ancient pagan practices, and related spiritualities and mythologies. Tarot readings and pop culture from decades past are prevalent in this series and are reexamined through the lens of Shimoyama’s own process.

GOMMAAR GILLIAMS

For this series, Gommaar Gilliams employs his signature symbols—birds, rain, boats, and mythological figures—to build his allegorical narratives. However, with these works, Gilliams introduces the element of time. “We are running behind or after time,” says Gilliams. “It’s very precious—it has always been, but more and more.” Through these symbols, the artist aims to build a relationship between the past and the present, the universal archetypal stories that nonetheless speak to something personal and unique within us: the “collective memory created through time.”

ZAK OVÉ

These new paintings by Zak Ovè were created in homage to writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin, who was an artistic mentor to Ové. These unique, vibrant works incorporate an inventive use of mixed media: crochet doilies found in markets and rummage sales. Continuing on the themes of revolution and resistance, Ové draws on the writings of Baldwin, particularly his book-length essay, The Evidence of Things Not Seen.
