Jeffrey Gibson

As an American contemporary artist with part Choctaw and part Cherokee roots, Jeffrey Gibson incorporates his heritage into his many works that include abstract sculptures, paintings, and prints. Growing up in various environments such as Colorado, Germany, and Korea, Gibson has been exposed to a true multi-cultural lifestyle that has become a large characteristic of his style as an artist. Sourcing inspiration from his native heritage and the contemporary art world today, Gibson creates pieces that include objects or texts of which he harbors a personal connection to and translates them into elaborate beadwork and embroidery. From this, Gibson has been noted for his works Manifest Destiny, American History, and What Do You Want? When Do You Want It?

Gibson utilizes both Western and non-Western techniques in the fine arts and has work in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution, and more. Jeffrey Gibson studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before getting his Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. He currently lives and works in Hudson, New York.
