Claude Lalanne and Francois-Xavier Lalanne (died 2008) were a married couple that went by Les Lalanne in their joint artwork. Specializing in sculptures, the duo was known for animal and nature themes. The two together went against the popular trend of Abstract art in the 1960s and gained the attention of fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent, who began to commission them. Les Lalanne went on to create whimsical depictions of animals as unique furniture pieces such as a moth chair and ram dresser, though Claude states “they are not furniture, they are not sculpture – call them ‘Lalannes’”. The pair resided in France and worked on pieces that were recently exhibited in different venues across New York City.
