Luminous

De Buck Gallery is pleased to present Luminous, an exhibition by German artist Regine Schumann. This marks the artist’s New York premiere, as well as her first with the gallery. Luminous will be on view from September 13 through October 25, with an opening reception to be held on Thursday, September 13, which the artist is scheduled to attend.

Schumann’s work is nothing less than a transcendental experience in light and colour. Her sought after wall sculptures are greatly influenced by architecture, and each one is crafted to perfection. Schumann’s innovative use of materials, including phosphorescent paint, provides each work with a unique and ineffable luminosity. Dr. Barbara Willert, Director of Museum Ritter in Germany wrote the following of Schumann’s

sculptures, “their enchanting beauty is brought about by the dramatic possibilities granted by coloured light, which she transforms into wonderful, energetic beings; but their special charm derives from their complex, dualistic qualities, from the calculated game with optical phenomenon and the accompanying reflections on the basis of perception.”

Luminous features new work from Schumann’s ongoing Colormirror series that can be experienced wholly in light or in complete darkness illuminated by blacklight; this duality can be interpreted in various ways, as a study into the concept of night and day, of opposites, and so forth; Schumann describes her technique as “a way of merging light and materiality in such a way that I could make sensual, poetic works.” Works from this series have been included in many exhibitions in Europe, including Museum Ritter, Kunstmuseum Celle, and Leopold-Hoesch Museum.

Regine Schumann (b. 1961, Goslar, Germany) was most recently exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim, Germany and has had numerous solo exhibitions in Europe, Canada, and the US, and her work is in several important private collections worldwide. She currently lives and works in Cologne, Germany.

Her work will be included in the gallery’s forthcoming catalogue that will be available this December.
