Joseph Cohen

Joseph Cohen’s two-dimensional Propositions provide a contemporary take on the traditional field of painting, and its possibilities for transformation. Layering and a mix of commonplace and precious materials is a key factor in Cohen’s desire to make something new of painting. By using elements such as paint, pigment, varnish, diamond dust and gold on wood panels that project from the wall, Joseph Cohen creates works that invariably sit on the border between painting and sculpture in the number of unique viewing angles that invariably form around each artwork. Under light, the pieces with their surfaced textures are constantly transformed and give forth the vibrance of the precious materials that are incorporated into the painted surface. Cohen’s work is also notable for his mastery of color – the subtle variations of hue hint at the artist’s intense interest in creating a new type of artistic experience. Joseph Cohen was born in Houston, TX, where he currently lives and works. Cohen’s work is included in the permanent collection at the Museum of Fine Art (Houston), and has been included in exhibitions at New Bedford Art Museum (New Bedford, MA) and the Contemporary Art Museum (Houston), among others.
