De Buck Gallery is pleased to present I Am the Glory (2022), a print released in celebration of artist Stephen Towns’s solo exhibition, Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art.

This limited-edition print, I Am the Glory, will be available for purchase on the De Buck Gallery website from February 28, 2022 through May 8.

Stephen Towns (Baltimore, MD) is a painter and fiber artist whose work explores how American history influences contemporary society. For this limited edition series, Towns has created a print based on his painting, I am the Glory, 2020. The title is a play on the term “Old Glory,” which is used to reference the American flag. The figure in the painting represents the creativity and ingenuity of formerly enslaved Black Americans. This work further references Towns’ twin art practices of painting and quilting.

The painting I am the Glory, 2020, on which this print is based, is part of the solo exhibition Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance, currently on view at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. The show examines the American dream through the lives of Black Americans from the late 18th century to the present time. Using labor as a backdrop, Towns highlights the role African Americans have played in shaping the economy, and explores their resilience, resistance, and endurance, which have challenged the United States to truly embrace the tenets of its Declaration of Independence.

“For the past two decades, I have been researching American history and its influence on contemporary society…I have expressed both the horrors and accomplishments in much of my work. The figure in ‘I am the Glory’ fully embraces and affirms her right to be called an American. Glory is a piece where I can express the beauty of Black Americans and our impact on building the wealth this country so cherishes.”
