De Buck Gallery is pleased to present an exclusive look at Dizzy Spell, 2021, a painting released in celebration of a project Devan Shimoyama is doing in association with Art For Change and The Brooklyn Museum.
Hand-embellished limited-edition prints of Dizzy Spell will be available for purchase on the Art for Change website launching May 18, with their newsletter subscribers getting early access at 10am followed by a public launch at 1pm. $500 from each print purchased will be donated to the Brooklyn Museum. The print is released as a prelude to the Brooklyn Artists Ball taking place virtually on May 19 from 7:00-7:30 pm, honoring KAWS and featuring special performances by Brooklyn guitarist Kaki King, Grammy Award winners Snarky Puppy featuring Judith Hill and more.
Continuing the artist’s exploration of an invented personal folklore and mythology of the queer Black male, the work features a shamanistic figure entwined with snakes, a provocative character that Shimoyama first developed in 2018 for his work Azure Feed, and which has since become a recurring figure in his paintings. Several works at his Shimoyama’s solo exhibition “Cry Baby” at the Warhol Museum featured this figure.
Dizzy Spell is on view in De Buck Gallery’s online viewing room through May 31. The work will also be featured in Shimoyama’s upcoming solo exhibition “All the Rage” at Kunstpalais Erlangen June 19 – November 14, 2021. This exhibition will also coincide with the start of the artist’s first residency at De Buck Gallery, Saint-Paul de Vence, France.
