De Buck Gallery is thrilled to present Ardeshir Tabrizi’s debut artist Spotlight, a presentation of new and recent textiles. As part of our ongoing monthly Spotlight series, De Buck Gallery continues to bring to light a range of artists, highlighting new bodies of work and exploring key elements in their practice via our exclusive Online Viewing Rooms.
Tabrizi’s current body of work reflects his attempt to better understand his place within time and history. “History has fascinated me since I was a child,” Tabrizi says, “It is something personal, yet shared, and like a compass, it provides context. It has helped me place myself amongst generations of people and events that have occurred prior to my existence and through its lens, I can better recognize who I am.”
The De Buck Gallery Online Viewing Room will exclusively feature four of Tabrizi’s newest embroidery works, created almost entirely by hand, much like the process of Persian Suzandozi (needlework). The process of these works merged modern digital tools with culturally traditional techniques, ultimately creating intricate and layered compositions that reference ancient icons, artifacts, miniatures, and personal and familial imagery. The works examine the artist’s personal identity, as well as the interconnectedness of a larger global history.
Ardeshir Tabrizi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1981. His family left Iran during the Iran-Iraq War in 1986 when he was just four years old. After migrating across Europe, they were able to secure visas to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California where he and his family have lived since. Tabrizi’s creative process is intuitive, largely inspired by his roots and heritage from the East, his education in the West, and the contradictions at play between the two. In this vein, his work calls into question prevailing representations of the Middle East, as well as exploring his own dislocation. Tabrizi currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California where he is represented by Roberts Projects.
