BOHUSLÄNS MUSEUM | Nature Morte | Cindy Wright | May 7 – August 28, 2016

In Nature Morte, the Art Gallery´s major summer exhibition, we encounter a large number of international and Nordic contemporary artists showing works that relate to a still life tradition. Altogether 70 artists are included in the exhibition, many internationally known as Mat Collishaw, Michael Craig-Martin, Cecilia Edefalk, Saara Ekström, Gabriel Orosco, Marc Quinn, Jennifer Steinkamp, Cindy Wright and more.

Still life

Still life as a genre is often associated with works from artists of the 1500s and 1600s, but is also highly relevant in a contemporary artistic practice. The genre is a fundamental theme in art and inexhaustible source of new interpretations and documentations of our world and its transience – a memento mori. The exhibition brings together “old masters” from the Bohusläns museum art collection, known as the Johnson collection of contemporary expression.

Older art / contemporary expression

In still life tradition there are different themes reflecting classic motif worlds -flora, fauna, house and home, food and mortality are found in the exhibition. A variety of techniques are represented, from painting, drawing, photography, sculpture to video. The exhibition explores timeless themes of life, death and the passing of time – work that invites us to stop and think about what it means to be human.
